The Yeti Series
by Stacey McRae

The Yeti Series was originally inspired by a chess set that a friend of mine, Val Wynder of Dirty Dirt Ceramics created. It sparked an interest in chess for my own kiddo, which in turn made me want to build one for them to cherish forever. After constructing a chess set made with little forest creatures and yeti like kings and queens, an interest sparked to keep the series going.
The first yeti was very much a portrait of Val, with her signature hair style flowing out of her toque. From there, the Yeti’s began to take on the identity of women around me, and inevitably, versions of myself as I moved about the world.
There are Yeti’s made to mark an occasion or a portrait of a condensed point in time that was momentous, there are grief Yeti’s and Powerful Yeti’s. In my minds eye, they are in the forest together, living lives in the nooks where they are away from the prying eyes of man.
The Yeti’s are there during shifts in our lives or when there is an inner world that isn’t at all what I portray on the outside, but is very much a part of my existence. They began to form a series, and over time, they have began to illustrate the flow of our lives and that of the women around me.
The series has been ongoing since 2023
